A man has been charged after allegedly displaying a Nazi swastika outside a war memorial in Sydney’s northwest.

Police were called to the site on Wrights Rd in Castle Hill shortly before 7pm on Monday following reports of a man exhibiting the banned symbol.

Officers arrived to find a 31-year-old man with a swastika drawn on his chest.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Castle Hill Police Station.

He was later charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol by public act without excuse, an offence under NSW laws prohibiting the public display of hate symbols.

The man was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on March 19.

The NSW Police Force takes hate crimes seriously and encourages anyone who is the victim of a hate crime or witnesses a hate crime to report the matter to police through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

“It is important that the community and police continue to work together to make NSW a safer place for everyone,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
