Man and woman on McDonald’s CCTV may have information about Alameddine gangster’s murder

Police are seeking the help of a man and woman they believe may have seen something that could be ‘vital’ in solving the murder investigation of gangster Shady Kanj. Police do not believe the couple were involved in the crime.

A mystery man and woman are being sought by police who believe they may have seen something “vital” that could help in solving the murder of underworld figure Shady Kanj.

CCTV taken from the drive-through at McDonald’s Lidcombe captured the image of the pair who investigators believe were in the area near where Alameddine crime clan associate Kanj was killed on Friday, August 6, last year.

Homicide detectives do not believe the man and woman pictured in the front seat of the Audi Q5 were at all involved in Kanj’s murder, but think they could have information that may assist with the investigation into who did shoot the 22-year-old.

In particular detectives are interested in information about what happened on Miller St in South Granville both before and after the shooting, with Homicide Squad boss Danny Doherty saying they believe evidence was dumped there.

“We believe that those responsible for Shady’s murder went before and after to Miller St,” Detective Superintendent Doherty said.

“There is information to suggest they went there to dispose of evidence in that vicinity, so that’s really imperative for us.

“Someone would have seen them either just before the murder or after … some suspicious activity or behaviour, they may have seen it and just thought it was normal goings on, but it may be really crucial for us.”

Police believe Kanj, a low-level drug runner for the Alameddine crime network, was deliberately lured into a dead-end street at Chester Hill about 11.10pm.

As he and a friend pulled up four individuals were waiting and a “volley” of bullets were fired at the car in which Kanj was a passenger.

Kanj’s friend managed to speed away, but as he did so the shooters continued to fire bullet – one of them striking innocent man Ramadan Osman, who was sitting outside his home a few hundred metres up the road.

Mr Osman was struck in the head by a stray bullet and suffered life-changing injuries.

Kanj’s death would lead to the murder of Salim Hamze a month later, the individual the underworld and police believe fired the fatal shots.

Det Supt Doherty said the tit-for-tat feud between the Alameddine and Hamzy clans could have claimed another innocent life that night, and hopes the public can help catch those responsible.

“It’s a murder of a 22-year-old, I know there’s been ongoing issues that we’re all aware of,” he said.

“There was a large volley of shots that were fired that night and bullets went everywhere. One of those bullets struck Shady Kanj and killed him, another one did strike another man who was innocent.

“So we’re lucky that there was no more people injured or killed considering the number of shots that were fired.”
