A respected magistrate has escaped serious injury after being the victim of an early morning carjacking in Newcastle.

Early investigations suggest Robert Stone was not a specific target but the victim of a random attack on Monday.

Mr Stone was driving along a Newcastle street just before 6am when two cars, both believed to be stolen, approached him from behind.

One of the cars overtook Mr Stone’s vehicle and slowed down while the second was driven directly behind him before the magistrate brought his car to a halt.

He was threatened and ordered out of his vehicle before it was driven off by the thieves.

He was not physically injured but was said to have been shaken by the episode.

Newcastle City detectives are investigating.

Mr Stone had worked as a local court magistrate in Newcastle for several years before moving on to preside in other local courts, including at Cessnock.

A Department of Communities and Justice spokeswoman said: “As this matter is the subject of a NSW Police investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment.”
