The wife of Nationals MP Kevin Anderson has been charged with high range drink driving after allegedly blowing 0.250, five times the legal limit.

Anna Anderson, 53, was breath tested after being involved in a crash in her husband’s electorate of Tamworth just after 2pm on Thursday last week.

She was driving her Volkswagon Tiguan east on White Street East Tamworth while a 56-year-old woman was travelling west. They collided at the intersection of Upper Street.

Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were nearby and provided assistance, police said today.

Police said in a statement a 53-year-old woman was subjected to a roadside breath test, returning a positive result.

She was arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.250.

She was issued with a court attendance notice for driving with High Range PCA and is due to appear at Tamworth Local Court on May 17.

Her licence was also suspended.

The driver of the other car, a Ford Focus, was treated by paramedics and taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, where she underwent surgery for a fractured arm.

Mr Anderson, the NSW Minister for Better Regulation, was slammed by a magistrate in 2011 for standing up for a mate who was facing a drink-driving charge.

He wrote a personal character reference for the friend, 45, which was tendered to Tamworth Magistrates Court.

The friend pleaded guilty to low-range drink-driving and was given a six-month good behaviour bond and fined $300 plus court costs.

Magistrate Roger Prowse said the request for leniency by the Mr Anderson was hypocritical and told a lawyer to shred the reference which had been made on the letter head of Mr Anderson’s company Centreboard Media.

Mr Prowse was also agitated the politician tried to pass himself off as a businessman and not as a member of the state government.

Mr Anderson at the time denied misleading the Premier or parliament about Centreboard Media.

“This was a personal reference for an old friend of mine to highlight his good character,” Mr Anderson said at the time.
