A man has stabbed his wife to death and left his daughter fighting for life, before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide in the state‘s north.
Police believe Neville Michell killed his wife Michelle Michell, 50, at a home on Glen Innes Road at Inverell, in northern NSW, about 2.20am on Wednesday.
He then turned the knife on their daughter Jennifer, 21, who has since been airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle where she is in a critical condition.
At about 7.45am, Mr Michell was found dead just out of town, at a property on Kings Plain Road.
Mr and Mrs Michell‘s friends said their relationship had been “rocky” for a number of years.
It is understood at the time of the attack several other family members may have also been at the home, including a young child.
When NSW Police arrived at the scene they found Mrs Michell suffering stab wounds.
She died a short time later.
A police manhunt lasted more than five hours before the grim discovery of Mr Michell‘s body was made.
Locals took to Facebook to express their shock at the incident, describing it as a “sad” and ”scary” thing for their community.
Part of Glen Innes Road was closed off early on Wednesday but has since been reopened.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
