A mother and son have been arrested during early morning raids as part of an ongoing investigation into an allegedly botched attempt to murder gangland figure Ibrahem Hamze.
Police believe Hamze — the younger brother of slain crime boss Bilal Hamze — was inadvertently saved when officers noticed a stolen Mercedes containing two masked gunmen on a North Sydney street on August 14.
As they tried to pull the car over the two masked men fled, with police believing they ultimately intervened in what was the latest escalation in the underworld war between the Hamzy and Alameddine networks.
A 19-year-old man was arrested at a Wentworthville home on Wednesday morning during a raid by officers from NSW Police Criminal Groups Squad as part of Strike Force Gillwinga’s investigation into the alleged murder plot.
Police allege the man is linked to a syndicate which subleased a garage in Cammeray which was ultimately used as a storage facility for high-performance vehicles.
The vehicles would then allegedly be used in criminal activities, such as the alleged attempt on Hamze’s life.
During the 6am raids the teenager was injured and taken to Westmead Hospital with a cut head. He is expected to be charged later today.
A 45-year-old woman, understood to be the man’s mother, was also arrested over her behaviour during the raid.
She was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Paramatta Police Station and then to Westmead Hospital.
It is understood police do not allege the woman was in anyway involved in the syndicate.
The arrests come just weeks after police charged Samuel Rokomaqisa, 31, with conspiring and agreeing to murder Hamze.
Police allege they found Rokomaqisa’s DNA in the Mercedes and also on a jerry can in the Toyota the two gunmen are alleged to have carjacked.
Hamze was considered by the police to be an at-risk individual.
