A Dover Heights man briefly left his wife's side on Wednesday to reveal he knew little about what preceded Matthew Ramsay allegedly turning up on his cliffside doorstep on Monday, armed with a kitchen knife.

Ramsay, 46, a well-known Sydney commercial real estate agent,  is accused of plunging a knife into the chest of the mother-of-two after an altercation at her home.

As the bloodied woman stumbled out onto the footpath on Weonga Rd and screamed for help, witnesses on a nearby building site said they watched Ramsay get into a white Audi 4WD and “calmly drive away”.

The woman  was continuing to recover at home on Wednesday after being released from hospital. The couple’s two children, who were at school their mum was allegedly attacked, were keeping her company.

“She’s doing the best she can,” the husband said.

Ramsay’s lawyer Andrew O’Brien would not confirm reports his client had recently been treated at a clinic for alcohol dependency.

“I won’t comment on any of that,” Mr O’Brien said.

Ramsay was charged with one count of cause wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on October 19.

Waverley Local Court heard he was also facing an unrelated shoplifting charge after he allegedly stole flavoured milk, a Snickers bar and chocolates from a petrol station in Woollahra in July.

Mr O’Brien told the court he would seek to have the shoplifting dealt with under mental health legislation when that matter returns to court.

Friends of Ramsay told The Daily Telegraph they were “shocked” to hear of the allegations.

“It’s a really, really sad situation,” the friend said.
