The government will review a magistrate’s decision to grant bail to notorious and unrepentant rapist, Simon Monteiro, as the sex offender’s own brother called for him to be “put in jail where he belongs”.
Monteiro, who was also known as Simon Lowe and “the Playboy rapist”, was released from Gosford Local Court on October 6 after police charged him with breaching the strict monitoring orders put in place after his rape sentence expired.
The 56-year-old, who was sentenced to 11 years jail in 2009 over the violent rape of a Sydney woman in 2007, and has been described in court as a lying psychopath, has also had an interim apprehended violence order taken out against him by police.
The order was taken out to protect a woman who told police she had recently become romantically linked with Monteiro.
Police refused Monteiro’s bail when they charged him with two counts of failing to comply with his extended supervision order and failing to appear in accordance with his bail acknowledgment. But Magistrate Alan Railton released Monteiro, who represented himself, on conditional bail following a hearing on October 6, court records said.
Given Monteiro’s notorious history, NSW Attorney-General Michael Daley said he would review the decision.
“The Attorney-General has asked to see a transcript of the hearing,” a spokesman for Mr Daley said.
This comes as the family of Monteiro, known as Simon Lowe before changing his name, said he was a danger to the community.
“What does it take for this guy to be put back in jail where he belongs?,” Monteiro’s brother Brett Lowe said.
“Because I keep having people tell me what Simon is doing. He’s definitely dangerous. Female friends have met Simon and said ‘Never leave me in the same room with him again’. They’ve met him once.
“And that’s numerous people (saying that).”
Monteiro became known as “The Playboy rapist” because he was a socialite decades ago and boasted about running with US celebrity circles.
A court in September was told that Monteiro has been diagnosed with “psychopathic traits”, narcissistic personality disorder and was a compulsive liar.
Court records said Monteiro faced Gosford Local Court on October 24 on charges of breaching the AVO and failing to appear in accordance with his bail conditions. His bail was continued by Magistrate John McIntosh.
In July 2020, the NSW Supreme Court placed Monteiro on an ESO for five years under a law that deals with protecting the community from high risk offenders, finding he’d never “accepted responsibility” for his crime.
