The mayor of Griffith City Council will face court after allegedly being nabbed driving dangerously and with more than double the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Doug Curran, who has sat on the council for more than a decade, was allegedly spotted driving dangerously near the town’s main street by police shortly after midnight on Sunday, September 18.

Officers from the Murrumbidgee Police District pulled the car over and spoke with the driver, alleged to be Mr Curran, 48, who then returned a positive roadside breath test.

He was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station where he was subjected to a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.106.

He is due to appear in Griffith Local Court on December 7 and his licence was also suspended.

Mr Curran said “no comment” when contacted by The Daily Telegraph about the issue, declining to say whether he had any plans to step down from his position on council pending the outcome of the case.

Mr Curran was first elected to Griffith City Council 13 years ago and was elected mayor by popular vote in 2021.

His profile on the Regional Cities NSW states that “Serving the community is more than just a ‘job’ for Councillor Curran; he is dedicated to leading Griffith into the future, driving development and jobs growth, looking at ways to improve housing and liveability, and creating a safe and welcoming space for the community”.
