Swim coach Dick Caine hit with fresh charges, accused of raping 10yo girl

Shocking claims have emerged in court documents alleging famed swim coach Dick Caine twice raped a 10-year-old girl during the mid 1970s, then repeatedly sexually abused her for the next four years.

Dick Caine charged over historical alleged sexual abuse of teenage girls

Elite swim coach Dick Caine has been hit with almost a dozen fresh historic child abuse charges including allegations he twice raped a 10-year-old girl.

The complainant, now aged in her 50s, is one of four women to have come forward in the past month levelling fresh claims of historic sexual and indecent assault against Caine, one of Australia’s most successful swim coaches whose career spans more than 40 years and includes multiple Olympic and world champions.

Caine was not required to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday, however his lawyer was present to hear prosecutors lay an additional 11 charges against him, bringing the total number of charges to 21, spread across six alleged victims.

Police will allege all of the now-adult women were Caine’s former students at his swim school, Carss Park Swimming Pool and that the alleged abuse took place “at various locations” around southern Sydney.

Caine, who according to his website has references from former Australian prime ministers Bob Hawk and John Howard and former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian, was initially arrested at his Condell Park home in June and charged with six counts of carnal knowledge as a teacher of a girl aged 10-17 and three counts of indecent assault after police received complaints from two women last year.

The references pre-date the charges being laid against Caine.

Court documents reveal those charges relate to allegations Caine repeatedly raped two girls during the 1970s, when they were aged 15 and 16.

Caine was remanded in custody following his arrest before being granted bail by a magistrate on a $10,000 surety after his wife revealed the swimming great had been diagnosed with terminal lung and throat cancer and had “maybe six months” to live.

Outside court in June, defence lawyer Brian Wrench said he would ask police to discontinue the case against Caine.

“Today NSW Police charged an innocent man, a terminally ill man, for an offence that occured 46 years ago,” Mr Wrench said.

“He is going to fight to his dying last breath to clear his name, it’s a terrible situation.”

Police revealed on Tuesday morning four more alleged victims have come forward following media coverage of Caine’s case and accused the swim coach of sexually abusing them.

Prosecutors have now slapped Caine with a further seven counts of carnal knowledge teacher of girl aged 10-17 years and a further four counts of indecent assault of a female.

The alleged rapes of the 10-year-old girl, referred to only as “victim 3” in court documents, occurred in 1975,the mid-1970s police will allege.
