Fake ‘MDMA’ drug 25C-NBOMe causes mass overdose in Sydney

A deadly synthetic hallucinogenic being masked as MDMA on the streets of Sydney has resulted in several hospitalisations over the past week.

Australia's cocaine crisis

A potentially deadly synthetic drug being masked as MDMA on Sydney’s streets left six people in a serious condition in hospital last week, prompting health warnings.

The potent hallucinogenic drug 25C-NBOMe or “N-Bomb” is being sold on the streets as MDMA however experts said the powder was laced with toxic chemicals which could cause a severe, potentially life-threatening reaction.

The drug is a synthetic psychedelic that often appears in the form of blotting paper with images and logos like LSD, a clear liquid, a white powder or a pill.

Its effects are rapid, making the risk of overdose high, with symptoms like hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, confusion, panic and high body temperature common.

The NBOMe class of drug has been linked to several deaths in Australia.

Six people were rushed to hospital in Sydney last week after consuming the drug.

Health authorities have warned of the potentially deadly side effects of 25C-NBOMe.

The synthetic psychedelic was also found to contain 4-fluoroamphetamine, a stimulant drug with similar effects to MDMA.

NSW Poisons Information Centre Medical director Dr Darren Roberts said the drugs could cause more severe reactions than other hallucinogenics such as LSD.

“The hallucinations and stimulant effects of 25C-NBOMe can make people lose a sense of reality, making them prone to violence, accidents and injury. Using 25C-NBOMe with other drugs, such as stimulants increases the risk of harm,” Dr Roberts said.

“These drugs are potent so even a small amount is associated with a risk of overdose and there have been multiple reports of deaths from overdose and accidents in Australia over the past decade.”
