Ex-Hells Angels bikie boss Mustafa Hafizi spared jail time over tax fraud as he reveals he’s left the gang

Fed up after his latest arrest, the wife of Sydney Hells Angels bikie boss Mustafa Hafizi gave her husband an ultimatum. Almost 18 months on, his mind is fairly made up.

A prominent Sydney bikie boss has revealed he has turned his back on the ‘one percenter’ life, after his wife gave him an ultimatum - her or the Hells Angels.

Mustafa Hafizi, once one of Sydney’s most recognisable bikies as the boss of the Hells Angels, told the NSW District Court this week that he is no longer affiliated with the outlaw motorcycle club he called home for more than a decade and was now gainfully employed and living a law-abiding life.

The court heard Hafizi’s about-face came after his latest arrest in August 2023 for tax fraud.

He pleaded guilty to defrauding the government of $71,000 after lodging fake business activity statements in order to claim GST refunds.

The bulk of the money Hafizi obtained on his own, however one fraud - an $11,000 return of which he received $3,000 - was committed with fellow Hells Angels bikie Aaron Wynn and former Roosters NRL player turned boxer Willis Meehan.

Both Wynn and Meehan pleaded guilty over their roles in the fraud and received suspended recognisance bonds.

Meanwhile, Hafizi’s wife told her husband it was time to choose between her and the outlaw lifestyle.

A psychological report tendered to the court revealed Hafizi began gambling and experimenting with drugs at school and started hanging out at a tattoo shop, which led to him joining the Bandidos bikie gang in his late teens.

The court heard he patched over to the Hells Angels at the age of 23 - the same year he was sentenced to five years’ prison for his role in a shooting at a Parramatta hotel.

Once released from custody at the age of 28, Hafizi worked in the construction and building industry, obtained his truck licence and worked for an excavation company until the pandemic hit.

According to court documents, Hafizi was earning $1500 a week working as a surveyor when he committed the tax fraud, but was spending most of his money on his crippling gambling and cocaine addictions.

In a letter to the court, Hafizi’s wife said after his arrest, she told her husband to clean up his act or leave the family home.

She confirmed he had taken her ultimatum to heart and was no longer associated with anyone from his past, leaving his criminal life behind and moving on.

Judge Stephen Hanley noted Hafizi had said he’d been able to withdraw from the Hells Angels without any adverse consequences or retribution that was often associated with leaving such organisations.

He agreed to spare Hafizi jail time on the tax fraud charges, finding he had worked hard to address his addictions and was now gainfully employed and living a pro-social life.

“I’m satisfied that you’ve matured and your responsibility has arisen as a result of your need for your family and wife to be cared for and assisted by you financially and emotionally,” Judge Hanley said.

“Your rehabilitation, in my view, is at a delicate stage and …. [should] not be interfered with.”

He sentenced Hafizi to a community-based intensive correction order for two-and-a-half years, which includes ongoing supervision by Community Corrections staff.

Hafizi was also ordered to begin repaying the outstanding $71,000.
