An apprehended domestic violence order was last week taken out by police to protect former ABC journalist Emma Alberici from her 18-year-old daughter, publicly available court documents reveal.

The ADVO, which was taken out on December 29, restricts the behaviour of Allegra McCauley, one of Alberici’s three children from her marriage to former 60 Minutes sound recordist Jason McCauley.

The couple married in 2003 and divorced in 2017 with the fiercely private Alberici, 52, saying little publicly about her ex-husband or their family.

Under the terms of the ADVO, McCauley cannot go within 50 metres of her mother’s home in Coogee or where she works. McCauley has also been charged with destroying or damaging property worth less than $2000 on December 29.

She has been released on police bail.

The one-time ABC star had been working as a headhunter for recruitment firm Derwent as well as with financial comparison website Compare the Market since she was famously made redundant by the national broadcaster in 2020. She is now believed to be writing a book called “Rewrite the story”.

The ADVO states that McCauley must not “assault or threaten” her mother, “stalk, harass or intimidate her (or) intentionally or recklessly destroy or damage any property or harm an animal that belongs to or is in the possession of Emma Gabriella Alberici”.

The teenager must not contact her mother other than through a lawyer. The court documents state that McCauley was not present in court when the order was made.

Alberici’s departure from the ABC followed controversy over a story and an analysis piece written by the economics correspondent criticising the then-Liberal government’s proposed tax cuts. The coverage was attacked in parliament by Malcolm Turnbull who was then prime minister.

She accused Turnbull of being a bully but the ABC later told the senate that her analysis piece lacked impartiality and there were some errors or misleading statements in her story. She later reached a settlement with the ABC.

McCauley is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on January 12.
