Eastern suburbs socialite Kate Balafas charged with high-range drink driving

The glam ex-wife of an embattled eastern suburbs doctor has been charged with high range drink driving, after she was allegedly caught behind the wheel while almost four times the legal limit.

The glamorous ex-wife of a disgraced eastern suburbs doctor has allegedly been caught drunk driving her Porsche through South Coogee.

Kate Balafas was charged with high range drink driving last month, after she was pulled over for a breath test on Denning Street at 8pm on Friday, November 17.

She was driving a Porsche station wagon at the time, which carried the fitting number plate of KATIE K”.

The 43-year-old mum returned a reading of 0.177, more than three-and-a-half times the legal limit.

Her licence was suspended on the spot and her case was mentioned at Waverley Local Court for the first time this week.

Mrs Balafas, who also goes by her maiden name Kate Klunder, did not appear before the court, and her case was adjourned until January.

Mrs Balafas, who is well-known in the eastern suburbs social circles, is married to embattled doctor John Balafas. Mr Balafas was convicted on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, intimidation, and contravening an apprehended violence order in May.

It’s understood the pair recently separated, with Mr Balafas now living in North Bondi.

In December last year, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal banned Mr Balafas from operating for three years after he was found to have sexually exploited and invaded female patients during medical check-ups.

Mr and Mrs Balafas listed their mansion in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Dover Heights for sale earlier this year – however it is yet to sell.

The home boasts four bedrooms, three bathrooms, three car spots and iconic panoramic Harbour views from all levels that can never be built out.

Mrs Balafas runs a business called Kate Cares – which provides in-home care for people with disability, physical ailments and the elderly. On her website, she described meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II years ago.

“As Maitre’d on The Venice-Simplon Orient Express I was personally chosen to assist HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on their official visit to Australia,” she wrote.
