An elderly driver will face a hearing more than a year after the death of 17-year-old schoolboy Calvin Wijeweera in northwest Sydney.

Epping woman Joan Ellen Smith was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan which reportedly left the road and struck Calvin and his 17-year-old friend who were walking on the footpath near Carlingford Court shopping centre on December 1.

Paramedics treated Calvin but he died at the scene on Rembrandt St. The second boy suffered a head injury and survived the crash.

In March, 91-year-old Smith was charged with negligent driving (occasioning death) and negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm).

Smith – who has pleaded not guilty to both charges – appeared at Burwood Court on Tuesday when a hearing date was listed for February 19.

A hearing date for September was vacated.

The hearing is estimated to go for two hours.

Calvin was a year 11 student at Carlingford High School and was remembered as a gentle boy who dreamt of being an aerospace engineer.

More than 250 mourners gathered at St Gerard Majella’s Catholic Church, Carlingford, a fortnight after his death to grieve their son, brother and friend who loved playing volleyball.

His sister Ovindi praised her “handsome, brilliant, athletic” younger sibling.

The hearing in February is estimated to go for two hours.
