The niece of a man allegedly chopped up by his wife in an horrific case of domestic violence said he was “not cheating” by having a mistress in Egypt.
Mamdouh Noful, 62, was reported missing from his Greenacre home, in Sydney’s south west, in July last year.
NSW Police last week charged his wife Nirmeen Noufl, 53, with his murder.
Police allege the wife used a circular saw and kitchen knives to dismember Mr Noufl in the garage of their home, in August 2023, then discarded his body parts in local rubbish bins.
A motive for the alleged murder was the recent discovery of Mr Noufl having a fiance overseas and sending her money, which led to an angry confrontation, police allege.
But Heba Atia, 26, denied her uncle had caused tension in his marriage by having another woman.
“He did not cheat,” she said. “She is his fiance. It is permitted in Islam for a male to have up to four wives … so long as he treats them equally”.
Ms Atia, who until last week believed her uncle was a missing person, said his wife knew about and “accepted” the overseas woman.
“My uncle was a faithful person, always went to the mosque. We are in pain, we are shocked,” Ms Atia said.
Since the shocking revelation by police, who investigated Mr Noufl’s disappearance along with the NSW Crime Commission, Ms Atia said his fiance was in shock and struggling, along with other relatives.
“She knows that he is dead … but we cannot tell my aunty (Mr Noufl’s sister) what (police think) happened … she has been having cardiac arrest,” she said.
A funeral or celebration of Mr Noufl’s life has been put on hold until police finish their investigation, Ms Atia said.
Noufl, who has eight adult children, is due to face court again on October 23.
A day after Noufl was charged with murder, NSW Police Homicide Squad boss Danny Doherty said police will allege she was a woman who “manipulates people and manipulates the truth”.
“The murder is brutal, but it’s also macabre and bizarre,” he said.
Police allege Noufl used her husband’s social media accounts to contact his Egyptian fiance and demanded she return money he had sent her.
“That probably delayed some of the investigations and was probably a ruse to disguise the fact that he actually indeed had been killed,” Mr Doherty said.
