The man accused of murdering a Sydney teacher after going home with her following a date has been arrested after a 12-hour stand-off with police in the Blue Mountains.
Officers were called to Fletcher’s Lookout at Wentworth Falls on Tuesday afternoon where they negotiated the arrest of Ashley Gaddie, 33.
The stand-off took place at the tourist location in the mountain village of Wentworth Falls. It was 45km from the suburban home in Cranebrook where Gaddie is alleged to have murdered his new girlfriend Dannielle Finlay-Jones.
Police found Gaddie on the wrong side of the lookout’s safety barriers and requested special resources and negotiators.
He is expected to undergo assessment before being taken to Katoomba police station, where he will be charged with murder.
Gaddie had not been seen since he allegedly climbed out the window of the Cranebrook house he was staying at with Ms Finlay-Jones on Sunday morning.
The 31-year-old woman was found hours later suffering critical head injuries and couldn’t be revived.
Police said the couple, who recently met on a dating app, had spent the night together at the Marsden Brewhouse in western Sydney, before going back to stay at a friend’s place.
The owners of the home thought the couple were having a sleep in after a late night out, but eventually went to check on her at 2.30pm and found her non-responsive.
Neighbours on Borrowdale Way reported seeing a man running from the house around 5am that day.
Ms Finlay-Jones worked as a teacher and was heavily involved in the Ramsgate RSL Football Club.
Staff at the club were told of Ms Finlay-Jones’ death on Tuesday morning.
“We are all in shock … we saw Dannielle on Thursday night, I cannot get my head around this,” a club spokesman said.
“Dannielle and her mum are both life members of the club, they are both so well-respected.
“Dannielle did so much to forward women’s football in our area.”
