When a young family discovered a masked intruder had crept through their Sydney home in the dead of night they were “terrified”.
Their Epping home was one of several targeted by the masked intruder, with police releasing terrifying security vision of the hooded figure in a bid to find him.
Over 12 days, the man stole several cars, wallets and cash, creeping barefoot through dark hallways after breaking into homes in Castle Hill, Ryde, Carlingford, Epping and Cherrybrook as the residents’ soundly slept.
While the thief did not take anything from the Epping family’s home when he forced his way in with a group of other men on October 20, the family says the vision of the man creeping through their home was “terrifying”.
“Seeing him in our house, it was terrifying for us, very scary,” they told the Telegraph.
Over two-and-a-half hours that same night, he hit two other homes, one on Murrung Way in Castle Hill, and one on Purchase Road, Cherrybrook, stealing cars from their driveways.
His spree began on October 8, when the masked thief made his way to Ryde, spotted scoping out Heath Street, before breaking into another family home around 2.55am.
Eight people were home sleeping at the time, yet no one heard him – and how he got in remains a mystery.
It was only when the family woke up and discovered their LandCruiser Prado was missing from the driveway, that it clicked someone had broken in.
“None of us woke up, we didn’t hear anything,” one resident said.
The contents of one of the residents’ wallets was found dumped at the end of the street – yet her cards and cash had been taken.
The residents told the Telegraph the incident had been “frightening” but were glad no one was harmed. However, they’ve had all their locks replaced in a bid to stop it happening again.
While police found the family’s LandCruiser days later, it had been “trashed”, with the thief also copping a speeding fine the night he stole the vehicle.
NSW Police have confirmed none of the residents were disturbed or injured during the hair-raising spree.
As inquiries continue, police are asking for anyone with information to identify the man who may be able to help officers with the investigation.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, is described by police as having a medium build, dark complexion and a tattoo on his left lower leg.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gordon police station or Crime Stoppers on 180 333 000.
