A driver has died in a freak accident in the state’s south after an object flew off a passing caravan and smashed through the man’s windscreen before striking him in the head.
It comes after emergency services responded to reports a motorist had been struck by an object along Burley Griffin Way at Galong, about 50km west of Yass, shortly before 6.30pm on Sunday.
The 49-year-old driver, from Canberra, was travelling east bound when an unknown item dislodged from a caravan travelling in the opposite direction.
The item pierced through the car windscreen and struck the driver in the head. Police confirmed the man died before emergency services arrived at the scene.
Three female passengers travelling with the man at the time of the incident, a 48-year-old woman and two girls, aged 16 and 13, were not injured.
They were later taken to Canberra Hospital and treated for shock.
The 32-year-old male driver of the vehicle towing the caravan was not injured and taken to Harden Hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and attended by officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.
As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information about the incident, including dashcam or mobile phone footage, to contact Yass Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
