A teenage driver allegedly responsible for a horror crash that killed five Picton High School students at Buxton nine days ago will take his bid for bail to the NSW Supreme Court.

Tyrell Edwards, 18, was arrested and charged with five counts of dangerous driving on Wednesday last week- less than 24 hours after the deaths of Tyrese Bechard, Lily van de Putte, Summer Williams, Antonio Desistoand Gabby McLennan, all of whom were passengers in Edwards’ Nissan Navara when it slammed into a tree on East Parade, allegedly while being driven at high speed.

Edwards was remanded in custody overnight and fronted Picton Local Court last Thursday, where he was refused bail.

Court documents reveal police will allege Edwards videoed himself “purposely and aggressively” turning the wheel, causing the car to swerve “violently” on the roadway an hour before the fatal crash.

Loud music is playing in the background of the video while one of the passengers can be heard laughing and saying “we’re going to spin out, cuz”, police allege.

In refusing bail at the time, Magistrate Mark Douglass said he had no confidence Edwards would obey the law if released from custody.

The court heard Edwards’ licence had previously been suspended twice in 18 months for speeding offences.

“That was not enough, according to police, to stop what is a very serious course of dangerous driving, if proven,” Magistrate Douglass said.

After being refused hail, Edwards was transferred from holding cells at Narellan Police Station to the Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre within the Silverwater jail complex.

It is understood Edwards was placed on suicide watch and put into protective custody when he arrived at the adult prison.

His lawyer, Karen Watson, has since lodged paperwork seeking to have a bail application heard before the NSW Supreme Court.

The matter is listed for mention before a registrar on Monday, however any application is not expected to come before a judge until at least next month, meaning Edwards could spend weeks in custody on remand before the case is heard.
