A teenage boy has been left with permanent damage to his legs after he was struck by a car that was allegedly being driven on a footpath in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, a court has heard.
The alleged driver, Ahmed El-Zaphir, was refused bail when he faced Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and failing to disclose the identity of a passenger as required.
The 22-year-old, who has no prior criminal history, is yet to enter pleas.
He was arrested at his home on New Orleans Cres in Maroubra about 9.30am on Saturday, about five-and-a-half hours after police allege he struck the 16-year-old boy on Beauchamp Rd in the same suburb.
Police said they had also seized a Toyota Prado, which would undergo forensic testing.
When El-Zaphir faced court via video link, his solicitor Jermaine Corban argued he should be released on house arrest to live at his family’s home.
Mr Corban also said several aspects of what occurred remained unclear, including how fast the car was going and what had happened prior to the collision.
But a police prosecutor argued El-Zaphir could interfere with witnesses, whose identities he knew, if released from custody.
El-Zaphir, who had eight family members in court, was ultimately refused bail.
He is next due to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on August 12.
