Burwood man in court over alleged drug supply

A man will front court over his alleged supply of illicit drugs after police seized more than half a million dollars worth of drugs from two separate hotel rooms in Sydney’s CBD.

Authorities found a stash of illicit substances including 500 MDMA pills, cocaine and methylamphetamine, with a street value of $600,000.

The seizure came after officers from the Inner West Police Area Command established Strike Force Weismantle to investigate the commercial supply of prohibited drugs throughout the city.

During the course of the investigation, which began in August this year, police seized 4.9 kilograms of 1,4-butanediol, and 252 grams of methylamphetamine.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 52-year-old Burwood man in Commonwealth St in Sydney about 10am on Wednesday.

Shortly after, officers searched two hotels in Wentworth St and Bond St in the CBD.

During the search warrants, police said they located 500 MDMA tablets, 100g of cocaine, 3.2kg of 1,4-butanediol, 700g of methylamphetamine, more than one kilogram of cannabis, and more than $70,000 cash.

Butanediol is a colourless liquid often used to make paint thinner and floor stripper, but is sometimes used as a substitute for illegal substances such as gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB).

The drugs seized at the two hotels have an estimated potential street value of $600,000.

All items were seized to undergo forensic examination.

The 52-year-old was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with 23 offences, including eight counts of supplying a prohibited drug (indictable) less than commercial quantity and six counts of supplying a prohibited drug greater than or equal to commercial quantity.

The Burwood man was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.
