The boyfriend of a woman killed in a horror boat crash at Pittwater has been released from hospital but is still not well enough to speak to police.
Kobi Bennett, 19, suffered a serious injury to his mouth and required multiple rounds of surgery after the crash on July 17, which tragically killed his girlfriend Kassandra Muhr, 20.
The young lovers were travelling in separate runabouts when they collided in the dark near Elvina Bay.
Investigators said they have still not been able to speak with Mr Bennett to get a statement from him about the accident, because of the serious injury to his mouth.
“He still can’t speak...once he’s able to in a few days, we hope to get a formal statement from him,” a NSW Police spokesman said.
More than $60,000 has been donated to an online fundraiser to help Mr Bennett’s recovery and to support the family of Ms Muhr.
“Our small, tight-knit community of Pittwater was struck deep in our heart this week with a horrific, tragic accident that resulted in beautiful young Kaysy leaving us and the love of her life Kobi Bennett in hospital with significant injuries,” fundraiser organiser Greg Cusworth said.
“Kobi and Kaysy, a couple of young boating enthusiasts, bonded over their love of the water and boats while carving their path and living out their dreams.”
“Kobi, a talented apprentice Shipwright with a beautiful soul, is a fun, determined, big-hearted young man... So please dig deep to help rebuild his life in whatever needs to be done to give him a brighter future in this dark chapter of his young life.”
“We anticipate Kobi’s medical bills, rehabilitation, mental health program and living expenses while unable to work, a replacement boat for transport and anything Kobi requires to help him get back on his feet and look after his wellbeing,” Mr Cusworth said.
Some of the funds will also be donated to Ms Muhr’s family to help with their costs coming to Australia and burying their daughter.
Witnesses have told police they saw the two boats in the water around 7pm, then heard ‘chilling screams for help’ moments after the crash.
Ms Muhr died at the scene, while Mr Bennett was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.
