Woman dies after Sydney boat collision

The devastated boyfriend of a young woman killed when their two boats collided has sent her mother a heartbreaking text message from his hospital bed.

Kobi Bennett, 19, is unable to talk due to an horrific injury he suffered to his face when his runabout crashed with another boat being driven by his girlfriend Kassandra Muhr, in Pittwater on Sunday night.

But the brave young man on Tuesday mustered the strength to message Ms Muhr’s grieving mother in Germany.

“He just said to me ‘I am sorry’,” Mrs Muhr told The Daily Telegraph.

Ms Muhr, a German national who fell in love with Australia while on holiday, died moments after the accident, in the waterways near Elvina Bay.

Mr Bennett was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital for surgery to an impact injury in his mouth, and remains there being consoled by family.

As they began making plans to come to Australia to collect their daughter’s body, Ms Muhr’s family said they took comfort knowing she died in the same “paradise” she found happiness in for the past three years.

“This girl lived for Australia. She loved her friends, adores the country, the people. She loved boats and nature. Her soul stays in Pittwater,” Mrs Muhr said.

“She went to Australia on a holiday and decided to make it her home.”

NSW Police Marine Area Command boss Chief Superintendent Murray Reynolds said detectives were still piecing together the moments leading up to the crash and no charges had been laid.

“We’ve got detectives there again today canvassing and trying to identify any potential witnesses. Both vessels have been examined by vehicle examiners, which is all part of the investigation,” he said.

Witnesses saw the two five-metre boats in the water about 7pm, as the sun was setting. But it wasn’t unusual to see the pair travelling on the water, as they both lived on nearby Scotland Island, a hamlet only accessible by boat.

Friends of Mr Bennett, who worked as a boat mechanic, said he was in a “bad way” after the crash.

“It’s messed up, all of it … he’s a great guy and none of us can believe it happened,” a friend said.
