A 27-year-old man from Bondi has been charged after allegedly being found with more than two kilograms of heroin during a taxi ride in the Inner West.

The heroin, with an estimated street value of between $500,000 and $600,000, was allegedly seized by police after receiving a tip off.

Police said just before midday on Friday 30 July, officers from the Inner West Proactive Crime Team pulled over a taxi travelling on King St, Newtown, where the man was travelling solo in the rear of the vehicle.

Police searched the taxi and allegedly found two clear vacuum sealed bags containing brown powder, which was later confirmed to be 2.2 kilograms of heroin.

There is no suggestion the driver of the taxi was involved.

The Bondi man was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with supplying a commercial quantity of the prohibited substance.

A breach of the COVID-19 public health order was also issued to the man for being outside of his residential area without a lawful reason.

The 27-year-old was refused bail and appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday 31 July where he was formally refused bail. He will appear in Newtown Local Court on 7 October.
