The boyfriend of a woman found dead in a Penrith apartment on Monday has been charged with her murder.
Dayna Isaac, 28, was allegedly covered in blood when her boyfriend Paul Sultana’s mother walked in and found her on the floor of her unit on Colless St, in Sydney’s far west, about 4.15pm on Monday.
Instead of calling police, Sultana’s shocked mother walked the short distance to the nearby Penrith Police Station to get help.
Not long afterwards a different police crew were called to bushland near Post Office Rd in Castlereagh, where Ms Isaac’s car was found alight, with the responding officers at the time unaware of the grim discovery that had been made back in Penrith.
An 11-hour manhunt for Sultana began with NSW Police detectives aided by the Tactical Operations Unit finally arresting him about 3.25am Tuesday at a house on Robinson Rd in Cranebrook.
Police charged Sultana with murder, alleging he killed Ms Isaac’s some time between 1pm and 4pm on Monday.
NSW Police Acting Superintendent Carlene Mahoney confirmed Ms Isaac and Sultana had been in a relationship for a few months, after knowing each other for many years before that.
“(They had been in) a long relationship as a friendship and just recently became more intimate over the last couple of months,” Act Supt Mahoney said.
The Daily Telegraph understands initial investigations by police suggested Ms Isaac had been assaulted and her body was covered in blood when it was discovered.
Neighbours reportedly called about a disturbance in the hours before Ms Isaac’s body was found.
“Police were informed that there was a disturbance at the premises and they did attend and they later identified that the deceased was at the premises,” Act Supt Mahoney said.
Police sources said neighbours had reported a disturbance coming from inside the apartment in the hours before Ms Isaac’s body was found.
Sultana is understood to have called his mother after leaving the unit, with that conversation leading her to the home to make a welfare check.
The large apartment complex where Ms Isaac lived remained taped off by police into Tuesday afternoon, with forensic officers dusting for fingerprints on a glass entrance to the underground carpark.
Residents of the building said there was often yelling coming from units but said the shock of the woman‘s death had left them considering their future at the property.
“I want to move, I don’t want to live here anymore,” one neighbour said.
Ms Isaac had previously been married and had two young girls, neither of who are understood to have been home at the time of the incident.
Shattered friends of Ms Isaac have told how she had a “heart of gold” who cared enormously for her children.
“She was a beautiful woman, a much loved mother with a heart of gold... she was my best friend,” the friend, who did not want to be named, said.
Mr Isaac remains at Penrith Police Station where he is expected to undergo questioning this morning.
Sultana is understood to have lived alone at the Cranebrook home where he was arrested.
The front yard of the property is scattered with trailers, rusty boats and various bits of machinery, while a small dog could be seen sitting in the front window of the house.
