A woman has been shot in the chest and police are hunting a gunman after a daylight attack in southwest Sydney, which police believe may have been linked to domestic violence.

The woman in her 30s arrived at Bankstown Hospital just before 1pm on Thursday suffering a bullet wound to the right of her torso.

After she was taken inside the doors of the hospital in a serious condition, detectives cordoned off the area and were treating it as a crime scene.

Police sources said there was nothing to suggest any obvious links between the shooting and gangland activity.

In a statement, NSW Police said the woman was being treated for her injuries and a manhunt was under way for the shooter.

“About 12.50pm on Thursday, January 12 2023, emergency services attended outside Bankstown Hospital in relation to an incident where a woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, presented to hospital with an apparent gun shot wound to the right torso,” the NSW Police statement read.

“The woman is being treated for her injuries.

“Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command have established a crime scene outside the hospital and are canvassing the area for any witnesses or CCTV footage.

“Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

It remains unclear whether the woman drove herself to hospital, or if she was rushed there by another person instead of waiting for an ambulance.

It is the third time a woman has been shot in western Sydney in six months.

Lametta Fadlallah and Amy Hazzouri were inside a car outside a home in Revesby in August when a gunman approached a front-side window and fired into the back seats where the pair were sitting. .

Ms Fadlallah — who had previously been in a relationship with two separate high-profile underworld figures — is accepted to have been the target of that hit.

Ms Hazzouri — a hairdresser who supported family in Lebanon — was an innocent victim.

Before that double murder, a total of 14 men had been killed on Sydney’s underworld gang war.
