Mystery surrounds the discovery of a man’s body in an Auburn park this morning - with detectives still working to identify the man and what led to his death.
The man - believed to be aged in his 30s, was found lying on a park bench in Auburn Memorial Park around 7am this morning, bleeding from a serious wound to the back of his head.
Officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command rushed to the scene and performed CPR on the man but he could not be revived.
On Saturday afternoon, Auburn Police Inspector Mitch Newton said police were treating the death as suspicious, but were unsure whether another person was involved, or if it was a case of misadventure.
“He has an injury to the back of his head, but how that was caused we don’t know,” he said.
“That’s what we are endeavoring to find out… it may be a case of misadventure but we haven’t been able to determine that at this time and we are treating it as suspicious.”
Inspector Newton said while the injury is significant, it’s not known whether it was the cause of death.
Police are unsure of exactly when the incident occurred, and whether it actually happened in the park.
Investigators are also looking into whether the man was sleeping rough in Auburn.
The man’s body remains at the scene, with forensic officers and detectives scouring the scene for evidence.
The park has been closed for several hours, as police investigate, with a pool of blood scene in the ground below the bench where the man was found.
Inspector Newton urged anyone with information about the man to come forward to police.
