Power plays and attempted shows of force by the state’s biggest bikie gangs have led to a major NSW Police crackdown, with homes raided and guns seized in a two-week operation carried out right across Sydney.
The Hells Angels have been leading a recruitment and expansion drive in recent months, announcing the creation of a new Bayside chapter in Sydney and bringing over high-profile members such as Jason Fahey, a former Bandido.
That defection led to suggestions of a feud between the Hells Angels and Bandidos, which they tried to put to bed by donning their club colours and having coffee together in public – with Fahey front and centre.
Fahey was one of the first bikies targeted as part of the NSW Police State Crime Command Raptor Squad’s two-week Operation Patch.
Raptor Squad boss Andrew Koutsoufis said the operation had seen two firearms seized, one firearms licence suspended and 36 consorting warnings issued, in a stern warning to the state’s bikie gangs.
“Raptor Squad remain dedicated to stopping the activities of OMCG members and associates before it escalates in any suburb; be it Brighton-Le-Sands to Broken Hill or otherwise,” Detective Superintendent Koutsoufis said.
“Operation Patch is a proactive tasking to ensure our targets know if they put a foot wrong, we’ll be making sure they feel the full force of the law.
“This is no knee-jerk reaction, rather it’s routine practice. If you are a member or associate of an OMCG, you should always expect a visit from the Raptor Squad.
“We want to send OMCG members and their associates a clear message; Raptor are always watching and are always ready to respond.”
Fahey received a warm welcome from heavily-armed officers in the form of a Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) compliance check at his Five Dock home.
In a video showing the officers banging on his door Fahey, alert to the fact they would break it down if he did not answer, can be heard yelling: “Yeah I’m coming”.
Moments later he is stood shirtless up against a wall by police, as his home is searched.
A Hells Angels cut and a Bandidos puffer jacket were both found inside Fahey’s apartment.
But he was not the only bikie targeted by the Raptor Squad with four FPOs handed out, 26 vehicles searched and 13 compliance checks at homes of members and associates of the Comanchero and Finks.
