Ankit Thangasamy: Policeman to go to trial after sexual intercourse without consent charge

A western Sydney cop charged after an alleged sexual offence in a city toilet cubicle will continue representing himself and fighting the charges after forgoing legal assistance.

Greystanes policeman Ankit Thangasamy will go to trial at Sydney District Court on November 11 when he will continue representing himself over allegations he had sexual intercourse without consent at a Haymarket bar in December.

On Thursday, Magistrate Stephen Barlow told Parramatta Local Court the 31-year-old cop allegedly had consensual sex with a woman in a toilet cubicle at the bar where “there was a function that involved alcohol”.

The court heard that police “alleged that at some point there was an act by the accused that was not consensual”.

The court proceedings took several hours on Thursday before the magistrate granted legal permission for Constable Thangasamy to read material that would normally be read by a lawyer.

The defendant made submissions after the lunch break.

“There’s 100 pages,’’ Constable Thangasamy told the court.

“I couldn’t really make sense of it.’’

At one point, Mr Barlow described the defendant’s claims about the Crown solicitor Andrew Keevers and a member of NSW Police making errors as a conspiracy theory.

He reminded the cop that an officer of the court would be struck off if such serious allegations were true.

The court heard how some of the cop’s submissions had “nothing to do with what [allegedly] happened in the toilet of the bar at Haymarket”.

The Central Metropolitan Region officer was charged with the indictable offence after officers from the Professional Standards Command started an investigation in December.

Constable Thangasamy pleaded not guilty and has not enlisted a lawyer because he told the court it was beyond his means and he failed to qualify for Legal Aid, which assists socially and economically disadvantaged clients.

His bail was continued.
