Ahmed Chahoud jailed for vicious baseball bat attacks on partner

The court heard one strike on the woman’s legs hit so hard it broke the wooden baseball bat in two. The second assault, this time with a metal bat, left the woman unable to walk.

A Sydney father has been jailed for three years after he twice bludgeoned his girlfriend with a baseball bat — once so viciously it left her unable to walk.

Ahmed Chahoud admitted using two different baseball bats — one wooden, the other metal — to beat his partner of two years in separate, drug-fuelled incidents inside the Cartwright home they shared.

Police documents tendered to the NSW District Court reveal Chahoud hit the woman 10 times on November 16, 2021, after getting angry when she refused to take more meth during their mutual drug binge.

The court heard Chahoud’s last strike on the woman’s leg was so hard it split the wooden bat in half.

Less than two months later, on January 7, 2022, Chahoud again laid into the victim, this time beating her a staggering 18 times with the metal bat, leaving her covered in bruises and unable to walk.

Court documents said on both occasions, Chahoud picked up the weapons and told his partner, “this hasn’t been used in a while, it needs some blood on it”, before carrying out the savage attacks.

The woman later told police she feared Chahoud would kill her and that she had been left with cuts and bruises all over her body and legs, however she said she had been too scared to report the assaults to authorities at the time.

The court heard a few days after the January assault a neighbour had called police when she heard yelling coming from inside the unit.

When officers arrived, the victim attempted to cover up her battered body with a blanket, despite the searing January heat.

When she eventually did reveal her injuries, the court heard she lied about how she got them, telling officers they were the result of her “walking into things” or “falling over” because she was “clumsy”.

According to court documents, it was only after the woman was taken to hospital and spent time away from Chahoud that she disclosed the abuse and provided a statement to police.

Chahoud was arrested in June 2022 and charged with a host of domestic violence charges, including causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent.

He was remanded in custody for more than three months before being granted bail by the NSW Supreme Court to look after his elderly mother.

Chahoud initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and was due to face trial, but struck a plea deal with prosecutors that saw him plead guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, while the grievous bodily harm charge was withdrawn.

Judge David Scully rejected a submission from Chahoud’s lawyer to have him serve an intensive correction order in the community, instead sentencing Chahoud to three years in jail, with a non-parole period of two years.

He noted the father-of-three had given evidence during his sentencing hearing that he was heavily addicted to drugs when he committed the offences, and had recently been diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

However, he also found Chahoud had engaged in “victim blaming” in his apology letter and had not displayed empathy towards the victim.

The court heard two other acts of assault, one in which Chahoud punched the woman in the face so hard she passed out on the kitchen floor, were taken into account in determining his sentence.

With time served, Chahoud will be released on parole in September 2026.

A five-year apprehended domestic violence order was also put in place to protect the victim.

The court heard Chahoud retained the support of his new girlfriend of three months, who was aware of the charges and in court during the proceedings.
