Adam Yurun charged for ‘street racing’ in Monterey crash which killed Xavier and Peter Abreu

A man allegedly involved in a drag race moments before a horror crash which killed two young brothers in Sydney’s south was at the scene of the deadly collision, before fleeing a court has heard.

A man allegedly involved in a drag race moments before a horror crash which killed two young brothers in Sydney’s south was at the scene of the deadly collision, before fleeing a court has heard.

Adam Yurun, 24, of Roselands, was charged on Thursday in relation to the fatal crash at Monterey last month which killed brothers Xavier Abreu, 10, and Peter Abreu, 9.

Police will allege Yurun was racing Jimmy Brito – who has also been charged – in his Audi A4, prior to 33 year-old Brito losing control of his Subaru Impreza and crossing onto the incorrect side of the road before crashing.

Yurun was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death; organise, promote etc race between vehicles; and two counts of fail to stop and render assistance after impact causing death.

As part of inquiries, investigators attended his home at Roselands about 10.30am and seized the Audi A4, which is set to undergo forensic examination.

In court on Thursday, Yurun was granted bail at Bankstown Local Court despite the magistrate labelling the police case as “strong”, with the court hearing there was an “abundance of CCTV and digital evidence” which support Yurun being at the collision and fleeing the scene.

Yurun’s lawyer Fadi Abbas said the matter was “in its infancy” and his client wished to “be on bail at home with his family defending the charges”.

Mr Abbas said Yurun would comply with bail conditions as he had presented to Campsie police station when his father’s car was confiscated by police at their family home.

Mr Abbas said his client knew how serious his charges were and “still made his way to the station”.

The court heard the 24-year-old had been suspended for speeding five times in the last five years.

Magistrate Glenn Walsh granted bail with “stringent” conditions including reporting to Campsie police station daily, surrendering his passport and not being in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.

Yurun’s matter was adjourned to November 30 at the Downing Centre Local Court.

Brito has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of causing bodily harm by misconduct and remains before the courts.

A 24-year-old woman, alleged to be the passenger of the Audi at the time, was also arrested at an Arncliffe home about 5pm on Wednesday and was taken to Kogarah police station and charged with conceal serious indictable offence.

She granted strict conditional bail and is set to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 17 October.

Another passenger, a nine-year-old girl, survived the crash and was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital at the time with minor injuries.
