The world welcomes 2022 with New Year's celebrations

A young tradie who allegedly walked into a New Year’s Day music festival with 50 capsules of MDMA in his pocket has fought back tears in court after spending a night in police cells.

Tyronne Maumaharatanga Ferreira, 22, was planning to distribute the drugs to fellow partygoers at the Field Day festival in Sydney’s Domain on Saturday until the moment a sniffer dog tracked him down, police allege.

Police further allege that after being noticed by the sniffer dog, Ferreira was searched by an officer during which time he assaulted the senior constable, causing him minor injuries.

After a night in the cells at Surry Hills Police Statio, the accused drug dealer faced Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, speaking over the top of his solicitor and pleading with Magistrate Paul Lyon to grant him bail.

“I’m willing to scrap my thing (lease) and go back to live at my mother’s,” a desperate Ferreira said.

The court heard Ferreira’s latest alleged offence came despite him currently being subject to a community corrections order for a previous crime.

His solicitor, Ikbal Khan, told the court his client worked as a scaffolder and lived alone with his dog.

He said the concerns about Ferreira reoffending could be mitigated with conditions including him moving in with his mother while on bail.

“I’ve spoken to his mother and she’s prepared to deposit money for surety,” Mr Khan said.

Ferreira, who appeared in court via video link, breathed heavily and sighed loudly as he awaited a decision on his bail.

Despite making reference to his “history” of offending, Magistrate Lyon allowed the accused drug dealer to walk free on bail.

Ferreira will be required to live with his mother, not take alcohol or drugs, report to police twice weekly, to post a $1000 surety.

Facing charges of drug supply, resist arrest and assault police, he was ordered to reappear in the Downing Centre Local Court on January 25.

In total, 85 people have been charged with drug-related offences after the Field Day 2022 music festival at The Domain in Sydney on New Year’s Day.

Police, assisted by the Dog Unit, carried out a high-visibility operation during the festival and allegedly found and seized drugs including MDMA, ketamine, psilocin (mushrooms), LSD, cocaine and cannabis.

Among as estimated 11,981 people who attended the event, 85 arrested and charged with drug-related offences — 81 for possession and two for supply.

The operation at the Field Day 2022 festival was carried out by the Central Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad (RES), with assistance from officers from across the Central Metropolitan Region, the Dog Unit, Licensing Police and the Police Transport Command.

It targeted anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related crime, and illegal drug use, to ensure the safety of festivalgoers.
