Police have seized a knife and charged a 15-year-old boy after a man died in a suburban driveway after being stabbed in the chest.

Police rushed to Spring St in Concord around 12.30am on Saturday, after a member of the public reported a man laying unconscious in a driveway.

Officers arrived to find a man in his 30s suffering a major stab wound to the chest. Paramedics and police tried to revive the man but he died at the scene.

Shock CCTV footage of the lead-up to the stabbing allegedly shows the 15-year-old pull out a knife while talking to the man. He is then allegedly seen chasing the victim, slashing the knife toward him before they run out of frame.

Burwood Police Area Commander Superintendent Christine McDonald said a homicide investigation had commenced, after a 15-year-old boy and his mother approached police at the scene.

On Saturday evening, police said the teenager had been charged with murder, was refused bail and would appear before a children’s court on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, Supt McDonald confirmed a knife understood to have been used in the stabbing was located in the home, describing it as “more than a kitchen knife”.

“This tragic incident serves as a timely reminder for young people who choose to carry knives on our streets,” she said, speaking generally.

“One day, in the spur of the moment, you may use that knife and one day you may kill someone with that knife.

“Today, one life was lost and one life will be ruined. It is why we have laws against young people carrying knives on our streets.”

It’s understood the man in his 30s parked a black Toyota on Wellbank St in the minutes prior to the stabbing, and was seen talking with the teen on Spring St before he was stabbed.

Supt McDonald said their relationship to one another was unknown at this stage.

The Toyota was searched by police on Saturday, and a wad of cash was seized, before the vehicle was towed for forensic examination.

What led to the stabbing is still under investigation, however residents on Spring St told the Telegraph they did not hear any yelling or screaming in the lead-up.

“It wasn’t until the sirens started that we knew something had happened,” one local said.

The man has yet to be formally identified.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with information or CCTV footage to contact Burwood police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
