Hells Angels bikie Tobias Sahlstorfer to serve 23-year minimum term for bashing murder of Mark Boyce

A Hells Angels bikie who initiated and executed the bashing murder of an innocent man has been jailed – reducing the victim’s father to tears.

Murder victim's father breaks down after verdict

The “remorseless” Hells Angels bikie who initiated and executed the “tragic, brutal and totally unnecessary” bashing murder of an innocent man has been jailed until at least 2043.

On Thursday, Tobias Sahlstorfer showed no visible reaction as the Supreme Court jailed him for life with a 23-year non-parole period for the murder of Mark Boyce.

He is the second of three men to be jailed for the crime, and the sentence left Mark’s long-suffering father, Malcolm Boyce, visibly overwhelmed.

Mr Boyce left court in tears, clutching a framed photo of his son – a supporter said he had opted not to talk about the case, having “said so much already”.

Sahlstorfer, 35, of Gulfview Heights, was found guilty at trial of having murdered Mark near his Elizabeth South home in January 2017.

He and two other men kicked, punched and stomped Mark to death.

However, Mark was not their target and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time – their actual target, who was a friend of Mark’s, has since passed away.

In 2019, Joshua Roy Grant was jailed for life with a 20-year non-parole period for his part in the “savage, brutal and completely unjustified” assault.

SA Police have yet to make a third arrest over the incident.

Last month, in his victim impact statement, Mr Boyce told Sahlstorfer he had suffered greatly in the wake of the crime, and would never forgive him.

“Toby, I have brought (this photo of) my son to court – which is the only thing I have left of him other than the memories – to see that justice has been done,” he said.

“You have shown no remorse … there is no forgiveness towards you whatsoever, only anger and hate … you took the life of my only son.”

In sentencing on Thursday, Justice Laura Stein said Sahlstorfer had “immediately” assaulted Mark, landing “a flurry” of kicks and punches before Grant and the third man attacked.

“(Mark) Boyce did not fight back (as) you employed your fists and feet as weapons … the beating was short, but brutal,” she said.

She noted Sahlstorfer’s relative lack of criminal history, but said little in his past or his chosen associations mitigated his offending.

“You have not shown any remorse,” she said.

“The tragic, brutal and totally unnecessary killing of (Mark) Boyce has inflicted unimaginable grief and loss upon his family.

“Their profound suffering is still palpably raw and cannot be readily described nor measured.”

Justice Stein backdated Sahlstorfer’s non-parole period to his arrest in August 2020.

As Sahlstorfer was led to the cells, he nodded to two supporters in the public gallery who replied: “Love you, brother.”
