There are billions of children around the world and a hefty sample of them want to be LeBron James, but the basketball king has a message for them: Learn to code instead.
The four-time MVP wasn’t completely dashing their hopes as he told them “no dream is too big”, but he’s issued a new challenge for kids to help design a video game for his upcoming movie Space Jam: A New Legacy.
“Learning computer science skills is important for everyone to have the opportunity and the ability to use technology and help write our future,” James said in a video shared by Microsoft.

James tells kids to use Microsoft’s MakeCode and Visual Studio Code to start learning the basics, with a new competition to inspire them.
Until December 30, budding designers aged 14 and over can begin coding and submit their ideas for an Xbox Arcade game based around Space Jam, LeBron James and Bugs Bunny.
Two winners will have their ideas brought to life, with their names featured in the credits of the game.
They’ll also get a pack of signed LeBron James and Space Jam merch, Nike gear, an Xbox Series S, private screening of the new movie when it releases, and a Microsoft coding workshop for their local community.

“The world needs more diverse coders,” James said. “No matter what you decide to do in life, computer science skills will help you get where you want to go.”
James also notes there are more jobs requiring computer science expertise than there are people to fill them.
