The two men who died while swimming at a popular waterfall have been remembered as two promising young students from India.

Emergency crews were called to Millaa Millaa Falls in the Cairns Tablelands following reports two men had failed to resurface from the water on Tuesday.

Chaitanya Mupparaju and Surya Teja Bobba, both in their 20s, have since been identified as the pair who died during their visit to the swimming spot.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to help cover funeral costs for both men after their “lives were cut short” and their families after they were “shattered beyond words”.

“Their untimely departure has left a void that can never be filled,” the GoFundMe stated.

“In this time of profound grief, we are coming together to support their families during this unimaginably difficult period.

“Your generous contributions will help alleviate the financial burden of funeral expenses and provide some measure of relief as they navigate through this heartbreaking loss.”

Queensland Police confirmed three men had been swimming at the popular waterhole when one man entered the water before he began to struggle, with the second man attempting to come to his aid.

In a statement on social media, the Telugu Association of Australia Inc urged other visitors to the region to be aware of their surroundings when entering the water.

“Another tragic incident has taken life of two Telugu students in Cairns,” the association stated.

“It is important to stay away from water if you are not completely aware of the location.”

The campaign has since raised nearly its $90,000 target in less than 24 hours at time of publication.
