A major search and rescue operation is ended in tragedy in Far North Queensland after two male swimmers disappeared at a popular waterfall.

A rescue helicopter and ambulance crews were sent to Millaa Millaa Falls in the Cairns Tablelands about 8.50am on Tuesday following reports two men had failed to resurface from the water.

Queensland Police confirmed three men aged in their 20s had been visiting the swimming spot, with one man entering the water before he began to struggle.

Another man entered the water after him to give him assistance, but both men failed to resurface.

Their bodies were located about midday.

Queensland Police said the next of kin of the men who died were still to be notified.

Inspector Jason Smith said the two men did not jump from the rocks but instead entered the water from the shore.

“It appears one man got into difficulty and then a second man has come to render assistance, but unfortunately they both perished,” he said.

Inspector Smith said people should always be cautious when entering any type of water and be aware of their surroundings.

“Far North Queensland is a great place to visit and take advantage of the waterholes,” he said.

“But everyone, have vigilance and take care and only go into areas where they know they have the capability to swim and capability to swim safely, and people have to look out for each other.

“This investigation has been challenging because of the location and difficulty communicating with witnesses involved in the matter.

“Thankfully, QFES swiftwater rescue have located the bodies of the gentlemen involved.”

Queensland Ambulance clinical operations director Chris Draper said there were “some accessibility issues” facing rescue crews but noted there were roads into the waterfall.

A Queensland ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics assisted in the search and rescue operation but were stood down about 12.15pm.

Millaa Millaa Falls is a heritage-listed waterfall about 18.3m high.
