CAITLIN Foord called it the “Japanese connection”, the moment that allowed her to score with her first touch.

And had Brazil not converted a late penalty, Australia would have risen to fourth in the world in the next FIFA rankings.

Foord’s goal was crucial, the striker sliding the ball home after her clubmate at Japanese side Vegalta Sendai, Katrina Gorry, had miskicked when through on goal and accidentally set her up.

“I was just happy to see it hit the back of the net.

“I was ready. I was hating sitting there and seeing the girls get smashed.

“There were some pretty hard tackles out there, so I just wanted to get on and stuck in.

“It did get bit fiery. We love playing the game and that just comes with it.

“If anything, it got us more pumped up and we didn’t want to lose.”
