IF there was any reluctance to embrace Sam Kerr’s cult status then Tuesday night in Newcastle should have won over the doubters.
She is the name on everyone’s lips.
The 24-year-old super striker has taken Australian sport by storm, scoring goals seemingly at will and celebrating in a unique style with a dazzling display of acrobatics.
After scoring in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brazil in Penrith she backed it up with a double, which included a celebratory backflip, in front of over 15,000 fans on Tuesday night in a 3-2 win.
“That (backflip) tonight was just for the fans. A lot of people asked me at the open training session last night. The first (goal) was a bit better than the second one but that’s what Australia has been asking for and I haven’t done one on home soil for a while,” she said.
But it’s her relationship with a fast growing and all-encompassing fanbase that could well be seen as her most redeeming features.
And one in particular reaped the benefits in Newcastle.
Who is this guy? I need to give him my jersey! https://t.co/3JNGMdkk1F

Richard Cuthbert made headlines in Penrith on Saturday after he crossed out Lucas Neill’s name on his old Socceroos shirt and put Kerr’s instead.

The Matildas star noticed and jumped on Twitter to invite him up to Newcastle. She said she would hand over her actual game-worn jersey.
And she didn’t disappoint, giving Cuthbert the prized possession in a small presentation after the game.
Was awesome meeting @cuthbert_rich , hopefully see you at a game in the future with this one on. Enjoy âð½ https://t.co/WXBjLoBYkt
