Trimmed-down basketball superstar Liz Cambage’s career-best form could get even better

WNBA superstar Liz Cambage is the fittest and leanest she has ever been and in good news for the Opals bid for gold at the Tokyo Olympic, still has her best basketball ahead.

WNBA superstar Liz Cambage feels fitter and faster than ever after a recent weight drop as she eyes the most important stretch of her career.

Cambage, 27, is in career best form but has vowed not to play into her 30s.

Instead, she is focused on her career at the Las Vegas Aces and helping Australia win a historic gold at next year’s Tokyo Olympic.

“I feel really well. My (Achilles) injury last year, I think it was my body telling me I needed to shred down a little bit, to not put so much weight through my Achilles,’’ said Cambage, one of the stars of the new Bonds Reto Rib ‘Get Real’ campaign which celebrates women of all forms.

“My game has had to change a little bit because I’m not as strong and heavy on the court but I’m feeling really good out there.’’

Since overcoming her injury and returning to the WNBA last season, Cambage has shown remarkable growth as a player.

In an extraordinary two-game extravaganza she produced 88 points for Dallas, which included a career-high 53-point game.

Cambage finished runner-up in the 2018 MVP battle, earned All-WNBA First Team honours and won a silver medal with the Opals at the world basketball championships.

Cambage is now playing with Las Vegas after requesting a trade.

She is also preparing for an Opals team call-up to play at the Asia Cup, an important stop for the Australian team ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

“I think my game is at the best it has ever been,’’ Cambage, 27, said.

“Body wise I’m the fittest but I guess I’m just dealing with old age now.

“I’ve been a professional basketballer since I was 16 years old. The wear and tear is starting to get to me.

“I’m not really planning on playing into my 30s. I’m just pushing it for all I can right now.’’

But despite the wear on her body after more than a decade as a pro basketballer, Cambage believes she can still improve as a player.

“There is so much more I have to improve and I’m working on that every day,’’ she said.

Cambage is looking forward to reuniting with her Opals squad mates in upcoming weeks.

“The Opals, our group is so amazing. When you have the right coach (former Opal Sandy Brondello) giving us all the right energy, it does filter down.’’

Cambage lined up for Melbourne in the 2017-18 WNBL prior to her return to the WNBA last season.

However the Australian said it is unlikely she will reappear in the Australian league despite being thrilled former Opals Lauren Jackson has taken over the competition reins.

“No. Not any time soon.’’
