Sometimes losing isn’t that bad - especially if it comes with the sweetener of being told you will be the newest Australian to surf on the world surfing tour in 2019.

Teenager Macy Callaghan, 18, has become the youngest Australian surfer to crack the women’s tour since two-time world champion Tyler Wright as a 16-year-old back on 2011.

And after making her first world tour final this year as an injury replacement, big things are being forecast for the Central Coast teenager.

“It’s every dream that I have had come true,’’ Callaghan said after finishing runner-up to world tour surfer Nikki Van Dijk in the Port Stephens Pro, the final qualification event of the year.

“I’m super ready for this.’’

Her elevation from injury replacement and wildcard to fulltime world tour surfer means Callaghan, who won the world junior crown when just 16, will also be in the mix for Australia ahead of surfing's debut at the Tokyo Olympics.

Next year’s world tour will form part of the qualification process for surfers hoping to compete at the 2020 Olympics.

MONSTER WAVE: New world record

Callaghan was invited into the national high performance squad this year and will be part of the Australian long team next year along with every Australian world tour surfer.

“It’s been a crazy couple of years,’’ said Callaghan who finished second at the Roxy Pro France in October.

“To be on the world tour when equal pay is there for women and the Olympics so close is just so exciting.’’

Van Dijk has requalified for the 2019 world tour and now heads to the final event of the year, the Maui Pro in Hawaii later this month

“I’ll take a lot of confidence from this win with me,’’ said the Phillip Island surfer.
