She hasn’t walked under any ladders or broken any glass but Jordan Mercer has suffered more bad luck in the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman series.

The former series champion won the first of two races in the second round of the series at Coolum but then injured her right foot when she fell in a sand pothole in the race to the finish line on the weekend.

Mercer limped up the beach to claim fourth place but immediately collapsed to the ground in pain.

IRON WILLED: No gain without pain for Jordan

“I’m hoping to have scans as early as possible this week,” Mercer said on Sunday. “It’s very painful today.”

Mercer said she felt a rip in the arch of her foot - the opposite to the one which was recently rebuilt in surgery and has been causing her pain and issues when running.

Mercer has a big schedule of racing ahead in both surf ironman and her other loves, stand up paddling, paddle board and ocean paddling.

Prior to the third round of the Nutri-Grain series at North Wollongong in December, Mercer is due to race the ISA stand-up paddling and paddle board world championships in China which start later this month.

SURF GOLD: From hell to high fives

CHANGE OF TACK: Matt Poole switches role

Training partners Harriet Brown and Georgia Miller finished one-two in the weekends racing at Coolum and now lead the series overall heading into the North Wollongong round.

Coolangatta Gold champion Ali Day came back from a shocking result in round one to win the men’s race from new series leader Matt Poole.

“Coolum hasn’t always been the best location for me and it was mentally tough to do this race coming off an 11th last round,” Day said.

“As hard as it was, I tried to not worry about wanting to change everything and just stick to my routine and keep things the same which paid off and it feels great.”
