AUSTRALIA’S newest world champion is a firefighter who conquered one of the most treacherous reef breaks in the world to claim the world SUP and paddle board title at Fiji’s notorious big wave venue, Cloudbreak.
Gold Coaster Shakira Westdorp won the women’s world title on the weekend despite never having surfed at Cloudbreak before the event.
In a big swell, Westdorp put three previously unsuccessful campaigns behind her to claim the women’s crown.
The 31-year-old former surf lifesaver beat defending champion Izzi Gomez from the US for the top prize with Peru’s Brissa Malaga claiming bronze.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Westdorp, a five-time Australian champion and goofy footer.
“This is the fourth time that I came to this event.
