Off with the Lycra! Active wear was certainly the last thing on the minds of Aussie’s top athletes, when the best in the business gathered in their dazzling gowns to celebrate the Women’s Health’s I Support Women In Sport awards yesterday evening.
The annual event, which puts the spotlight on Australia’s female sporting talent, had many fabulous faces to recognise at the Carriageworks ceremony, and when it came to the red carpet, the ladies certainly didn’t disappoint.
Swapping sneakers for heels, some of the best dressed included Rio Olympic sprinter Ella Nelson, wearing a slinky baby blue gown which was tied above the knee, Olympic diver Melissa Wu in a chic, white cocktail dress, as well as a jaw-dropping appearance from super stylish model Laura Dundovic, who wore a tight beige design with a plunging neckline and high-split front.
Eleven awards were handed out last night, including a Hall of Fame honour for former pro surfer Layne Beachley.
Rower Kim Brennan was named sports woman of the year while jockey Michelle Payne took home the reader’s choice award.
The Australian Women’s Sevens rugby team were named team of the year, Anna Meares won leadership legend, Katie Page was named person of sporting influence and Ella Nelson one to watch after her year in athletics.
“This was a really big year for me; it really put me on the map and I’ve been overwhelmed with the support and attention from younger girls who have told me I’ve inspired them,” Nelson told Confidential.
“It’s a big thing to be recognised as a female making waves in a male dominated sport.”
