CHLOE Esposito’s winning streak has continued.
Esposito’s gold medal moment at the Rio Olympics scored her a nod for moment of the year at Women’s Health’s I Support Women In Sport awards.
“For me to be the first Australian in history to stand on the gold podium, particularly as a woman in a male dominated sport, was surreal and amazing,” she told Confidential at Carriageworks.
“I’m over the moon for my small sport is getting so much more attention now.”
Eleven awards were handed out last night, including a Hall of Fame honour for former pro surfer Layne Beachley.
Rower Kim Brennan was named sports woman of the year while jockey Michelle Payne took home the reader’s choice award.
The Australian Women’s Sevens rugby team were named team of the year, Anna Meares won leadership legend, Katie Page was named person of sporting influence and Ella Nelson one to watch after her year in athletics.
“This was a really big year for me; it really put me on the map and I’ve been overwhelmed with the support and attention from younger girls who have told me I’ve inspired them,” Nelson said.
“It’s a big thing to be recognised as a female making waves in a male dominated sport.”
Singer Natalie Conway performed at the event.
“I understand what it’s like to turn your passion into career,” she said, adding: “It takes a certain type of person to have the motivation and discipline required for a career in sport.”
