Jessica Fox has raced for the first time since creating canoeing history at the world championships last year and has shown she is right on track for more milestones in the sport in 2019.

Fox’s double gold at the world championships in 2018 saw her usurp her mother Myriam as the greatest female paddler of all time with nine medals and her father Richard for the most individual world titles with seven golds.

On the weekend Fox contested her first major event since the October world titles and raced off with a gold in the C1 - her sister Noemie finished third - and silver in the K1 behind German champion Ricarda Funk.

“I’m pretty happy with that,’’ Fox told Telegraph Sport.

“I’ve had a difficult preparation, it hasn’t been super smooth, so to race here like this is pretty good.

“And to win the gold knowing I had a two second penalty is pretty pleasing.’’

Fox underwent surgery of her septum during her extended break from racing and has also been on the recovery from torn ankle tendons.

The Australian Open, part of the 2019 Sydney International Whitewater Festival at Penrith Whitewater Stadium, continues next weekend.

It doubles as a selection event for Australian paddlers.
