It’s the dream job - travelling the world searching for the best breaks in some of the most remote and stunning surf locations on the planet.

And it’s surfing legend Mick Fanning’s for the next decade after he signed a 10-year multi-million dollar deal with his long-time sponsor Rip Curl.

“Right now I’m just waiting for a swell and then I’ll disappear off the grid again,’’ said Fanning, who despite preferring to “fly under the radar’’ during his storeyed career is one of the most famous and recognisable surfers in the world thanks to numerous world titles and a shark attack beamed live to air four years ago.

“I get to go to places I have never been to and search out new waves. It’s pretty amazing.

“We have a few different places on the map we are looking at. The bottom line is there is nothing crazy like surfing glaciers right now but that can always change. If someone comes up with a great idea we can jump on it.’’

Mick Fanning says he has not regrets retiring from the world tour competition.

Last year Fanning surfed The Snake, whose barrels breaking right on the sand have been described as similar to the artificial perfection of a wave pool. He has also surfed among icebergs and glaciers and famously, under the Northern Lights back in 2016.

“They are all different. Surfing under the Northern Lights was incredible, a real bucket list thing to be close to so much power in mother nature,’’ said Fanning, whose lifetime deal with Rip Curl is one of the biggest retirement deals in surfing history and comes as the company celebrates its 50 year anniversary.

Fanning says he has no regrets about quitting the world tour but admits he is it’s “No.1 fan”.

“For me right now it’s about going to new places, that was one of the big things that made me retire, wanting to have a different routine,’’ he said. “It makes me happy.’’

Fanning says business - including Balter Breweries and MF surfboards - keep him busy but not too busy.

“I’m trying to pick a and choose. I don’t like to commit to much in case I get the call up to surf,’’ he says.

“The Search is my main priority.’’
