An injury-riddled Diamonds crashed to England in the final match of the three-game Quad Series but have still managed to lift the series trophy despite the 52-49 upset early Monday in London.

England ended the Diamonds winning run at the international netball event with their three goal victory but needed to win by five to take the series crown.

It was the second time in 10 months England have taken a win off the Diamonds who they also beat by a goal to win the Commonwealth Games crown last year.

“It’s a bit bittersweet losing that game but winning the series,” coach Lisa Alexander admitted.

“We don’t like losing but the players still did us proud.

“They were really up against it tonight and gave their all.”

Australia, with captain Caitlin Bassett and midcourter Gabi Simpson both out injured, started the London match well, stretching out to an early 14-9 lead after just 15 minutes.

But by midway through the second quarter England had levelled with the Diamonds and at halftime lead 27-24.

By three quarter-time the Diamonds were trailing 41-37 but fought back to level in the final period.

But urged on by their home crowd England again edged ahead for the 52-49 win.

“We’re just disappointed we didn’t win the game. We had our opportunities,” Alexander said.

As the deficit was not five goals or more, Australia won its third consecutive Quad Series crown.

The match was the last international Australia will play prior to their defence of the World Cup mid year in the UK.

In the other match this morning, New Zealand came back from their loss to Australia on Sunday to defeat South Africa 62-60 in an overtime thriller.

South Africa had just a day earlier upset England at home.
