TRIATHLETES Ashleigh Gentle and Jake Birtwhistle turned silver into gold as part of a victorious Australian team in one of the Olympic Games’ newest sports.
Just 24 hours after the pair won individual silvers in the world triathlon series sprint race in Hamburg, they combined with Charlotte McShane and teenager Matt Hauser to win the mixed teams relay world championship.
It is the first ever gold for Australia in the event which will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020 and will also be seen at next year’s Commonwealth Games.
Birtwhistle starred for the Australian team, overcoming a 36 second deficit in the final run to anchor the Aussies to victory over the US and The Netherlands in Germany.

“I have not been in too many relays but what a great feeling after some scary moments and to be able to pull together as a team.”
It was a big weekend for former world under 23 champion McShane who in the space of just over 24 hours booked herself a spot at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and won a world title.
“You are racing for your whole team and it was just so much fun to come out here and win this together,” McShane said.
